Our ThamesWatch 2011 project for 5/11 year olds will be announced in September but in the meantime, we have some interesting quizzes each week for pupils in the holidays. And we have an interesting poster project too which ought to engage children in the history of the Thames, transport, sport, the environment, nature etc

Project / Class Discussion Topics

To add to their interest in the subject, perhaps when they are travelling on the bus or in class the day before they visit the Thames, we have included some optional questions for participating children -

We would like to hear from as many schools as possible with their top ten or six of the best answers to any of the following questions:

Can you name some places or buildings near the Thames?

What do you know about the Great Stink of 1858?

Can you think of any unusual creatures that have been seen in the Thames?

Who owns the water in the river and can farmers take some for their cows or sheep ?

What is the reason we have locks and why are they dangerous?

Can you prove the water is moving and not the land on which we are standing on?

Why did our ancestors build so near the river ?

What is the effect of building a bridge ?

Why did the Victorians build the Embankments in London ?

Can we produce electricity from the water in the river ?
Where and how ?
